OH, CANADA!

When I got off the plane in Edmonton, I could smell the difference in the air immediately. My breathing was just so much better due to being so far up north. So right off the top, I was in love with my new environment. How could I not love fresh, clean air, and a fresh start. For the first time in a long time, I was clear-headed and determined to take advantage of the opportunity I had being in a new environment.

After all I had been through the first few years following college and as a professional football player, I was ready for a change. I loved football, and was really grateful I had been given another chance to play. Edmont on Eskimos was a storied program, and my first training ca mp in the CFL wa s quite an experience.

I learned quickly that playing in the CFL is a big privilege. Team spots are competitive and the sport up there is extremely competitive. Team s can have only a certain number of Americans, and a lot of people were vying to be one of the Americans chosen for their team. Fortunately, I was g ood enough to make the team there my first year, but I wasn’t g ood enough to play right away, so I had to watch a lot from the sideline. I spent time in a familiar and satisfying routine: working out, staying focused, and getting back in great shape.

Some of the basics of living in Canada took getting used to. Training camp was held at the University of Alberta, which was a beautiful campus right in the city of Edmonton. One day, after the last of two practices in training camp, I fell asleep in my room around 7:30 p.m. When I woke up, it was full sunlight outside with birds chirping. I immediately assumed I had overslept and was late for practice, so I panicked and started rushing to get my clothes on and go to practice. I knew if I was late, it could cost me an opportunity to play for this awesome organization.

I rushed out of my room, ran into the hall and headed for the locker room, but I noticed my teammates were in the conference room where the players lounged and watched TV. Still in a state of panic, I said, “Are we finished with the first practice already?” They all looked just as puzzled and confused as me. Finally, one of my teammates, calling me by my nickname, said, “Crave, you do realize it’s just 10:30 p.m.?” I was baffled. It didn’t even attempt to g et dark up there until 11:00 p.m.

I was so relieved, but I did not feel smart at that moment, and I was a little worried about adjusting. There were a lot of veterans on the team who were not really open to younger guys coming in and taking their spots. It took a while for my roommate and I to gain the respect of our teammates.
